Water on Two Sides
On the inside of a curve, the river wraps around the building, so windows on two elevations look at moving water instead of one. That doubles the light, gives every room a view regardless of orientation, and means you can watch weather arrive upstream long before it reaches you. It also creates the slow, deep pools that make swimming safe and fishing good, and the shingle beaches that appear on the inside bank each summer. Rooms are numbered so that guests can request a specific aspect, and we describe each one honestly rather than calling everything a river view.
Quiet That Is Engineered
Old buildings carry sound between floors, and a beautiful room where you hear every footstep above is a failure. Every restoration includes acoustic separation between apartments, resilient floor layers, heavy doors with proper seals, and secondary glazing where original windows had to be kept. Plant and machinery are located away from bedrooms, and housekeeping starts after nine. The result is that a building with eight apartments feels like a private house, which matters especially to guests who stay for weeks and to families with children who sleep early.
Kitchens That Work
Apartments are equipped for people who actually cook: a full-size oven, four gas burners, sharp knives, heavy pans, a proper coffee grinder, a large fridge and enough worktop to prepare a meal for six. Dining tables seat everyone at once, and the terrace furniture is solid rather than folding. Because the surrounding producers are excellent and the nearest restaurant may be twenty minutes away, most guests cook at least half their meals, and we stock the kitchen with oil, salt, coffee, tea and basic spices so that nothing has to be bought twice.
River Access That Is Ours
Each house has its own stretch of bank with steps into the water, a small pontoon, a swimming ladder in the deep pool and somewhere to leave a boat. Canoes, paddleboards and fishing gear are available to guests without charge, and the fishing association issues permits through our desk. Because the access is private, there are no crowds on the beach in August and no need to drive anywhere to swim. Water quality is tested through the season and the results are posted where guests can read them.
Breakfast Worth Getting Up For
In the hotels, breakfast is served on the terrace from eight until eleven: bread baked that morning in the village, butter and cheese from a farm four kilometres away, eggs cooked to order, fruit, yoghurt, honey from hives on the hill behind, and coffee that has been thought about. Apartment guests can add the same breakfast delivered in a basket, or order a stocked fridge for arrival day. Dietary requirements are handled properly rather than with an apologetic plate of fruit, and children are fed whenever they wake up.
Stays of Any Length
A single night is welcome, and so is a season. Weekly and monthly rates drop substantially, long-stay guests get a proper desk and chair, weekly housekeeping and laundry, and we help with everything from a doctor's appointment to a bicycle repair. Because our buildings are small, extensions can usually be arranged in the same apartment rather than requiring a move. Winter rates are low enough that writers, researchers and remote workers make up most of our guests between November and March, which is exactly the atmosphere we wanted.
